December Industry News Round Up

The New Snapchat in 60 Seconds

Snapchat is trying hard to make you make them your preferred social network.

They have made some updates and this is why:

  • Complaints from users say content from family and friends is being mixed in with adverts and publishers. Your friends aren't content, they are relationships which is why they are separating the 'social' from the 'media' and organising the content to make it more personal.
  • When it opens the camera now, on the left side will be your friends, and most recent accounts you have engaged with, and to the right is 'discover' where publisher content in personalised just for you.
  • Snapchat was started as a way to express yourself in pictures, but now it is who you want to express yourself to.
  • Express more, explore more -  that seems to be the message.

Email Marketing Predictions for 2018

Campaign Monitor, a leading email marketing software company, has spoken to 6 E-marketing gods and predicted the future of email in 2018.

You may need to read it yourself as it even blows our mind slightly - it's one of those 'grab a cup of tea and spend some time reading it properly' types of news releases. But in a nutshell, they believe the marketing funnel has changed, it is no longer a funnel shape and looks more like a diabolo and is not just about new leads but maximising the investment from a customer. An obvious point, but one that needs constant reinforcement.

They are also advocating high-value emails, watch your customers journey and contact them at relevant points.

Personalised emails are also going to come into their own, and they don't mean 'Hey Nicola do you still want that product in your cart' (although, still do that, it's still very good), they mean look to the future and not the past -  you bought this so maybe now you are ready for THIS.

We will stop there, go read the article and see what you think is relevant to your business.

Amazon's Patent for the 'One Click' Checkout has finally expired

One-click buying does exactly what it says on the tin which is to allow a customer to make online purchases with a single click (providing payment details have already been entered and saved for reuse). Amazon held the patent for this for 10 long years but, as of September 2017 when it expired, other merchants now have access to this system. Magento are the first 'commerce leader' to offer this as a standard feature (in Magento 2.2.2).

Engagement Bait's Days are Number

You know THOSE Facebook posts which say 'LIKE if you have a daughter who is your world'? Well their days are finally numbered as Facebook has announced this week (18th December) they are demoting any personal or page posts promoting 'Engagement Bait'.

Facebook will also be reducing the organic reach for pages consistently taking advantage of the News Feed algorithm by goading people into interacting with the posts - so be aware if you have previously used this (no one is judging you, we do what we can to get in front of the maximum audience).

They have noted certain posts such as asking for recommendations, missing children shares, and charity posts will not be affected by the update.

It is worth reading the article yourself here and also having a recap of the News Feed Guidelines as it offers some useful advice as well as a quick refresh of how it works - read here.
