  • West Mercia Police - We Don't Buy Crime

Project background

In 2015, West Mercia Police launched ‘We Don’t Buy Crime’ tackling acquisitive crime and associated harm with forensic marking kits registered to more than 58,000 residents, across Herefordshire, Shropshire & Worcestershire. Since its launch, the project has gone from strength to strength with five main strands all aimed at preventing crime.

 The five strands are:

  • Fuel Stations
  • Covert Tactics
  • Second Hand Stores
  • Towns & Villages
  • Associated Harm

The campaign encompasses road signage, forensic property marking kits, currently provided by Smartwater, and training business owners, residents and frontline professionals to have their ‘eyes and ears to the ground’ when it comes to acquisitive crime and associated harm.

The project has been hugely successful and as it developed the We Don’t Buy Crime team were keen to refresh the brand residents and business owners aware of the recognizable activities of the initiative.

It was agreed that a new brand incorporating a new logo would be rolled out across signage, residential support and crime prevention packs & property marking kits and a new website portal that we would build, to allow for more visibility of the important work the We Don’t Buy Crime team does.

Our strategy

In collaboration with the members of the We Don’t Buy Crime team at West Mercia Police, our own creative design team produced a new brand for the campaign, which was rolled out to 5 specific signs & posters to target various groups more closely in their message.

Our focus through these posters, stickers and signage was to provide a more visible presence for the campaign, with relevant signage deterring those who may be tempted to commit a crime, but also a number dedicated to providing reassurance to local residents or giving them an outlet to speak to someone if they suspect their area is being targeted.

As part of the brief, we also utilised the new branding to produce an information pack for residents, which included a leaflet, a sticker design for residents windows, as well as packaging for this and the property marking kits.

We also built a website on the WordPress platform - https://wedontbuycrime.co.uk/, which highlights the good work the team do, along with video content, information for business owners and residents, as well as a contact form for those interested in the project and want to find out more or become involved. This platform also allows the We Don’t Buy Crime team to expand the site for if and when the campaign expands, either in its scope or geographically.

Overall we have provided  We Don’t Buy Crime with a more striking and up to date look and feel, which targets the right people with the right message. The branding is now consistent across a range of materials, including signage, information packs, leaflets & a clean, modern website,  which will allow the campaign to go on and become even more successful in the future.
