Rubery Owen are a family-owned business established over 130 years ago in Darlaston, West Midlands. They have a rich history and now operate eight group companies in a diverse range of markets, from material testing and chemical formulation through to grass machinery and even a car dealership specialising in Land Rover, Subaru and Great Wall.
The brief
The Rubery Owen Group approached us in 2015 as they were looking for new brands and websites across the group, as well as ongoing digital marketing partners, to bring the traditional company to the forefront of digital.
The ‘RO’ monogram seen in the Rubbery Owen logo was extremely important to get right. We went through many iterations in the studio as we developed and refined it into what we see in the finished logo.
Our strategy
We’ve worked with Rubery Owen over the past 18 months on new brands for three of the group companies, as well as rebranding the group itself. The new logo was an evolution of their existing brand. By modernising the underline from the R, we were able to unify the letters and bring the company together with a fresh new look.
Following the new brands and websites, we’ve been working to promote the brands to the target markets using a mix of digital marketing tools - from Social Media, Email Newsletters, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Pay Per Click Advertising on Social Media and Google Adwords, to more traditional marketing tools such as direct mailers and trade advertisements.

Rubery Owen has been established since 1884 and we started working with Clear in 2015. At this time Richard Jenkins, our fourth generation executive chairman took over from John Owen. Our history and heritage is of the utmost importance to us and working with an agency who understood this was key. Each of our companies is close to the group and the group works in situ with each company whilst it also stands alone in its own right.
We have developed the digital marketing capability of our Group together, in close partnership. Our websites are now unrecognisable (in a very good way) and the SEO and PPC activities are managed closely and all our digital activities work very hard for set budgets. Clear has helped us develop a first-in-market dashboard and web-based reporting system which is changing battery management programmes – it has not always been an easy climb but innovation is never a straightforward!
