Moving to Magento 2 – Time to upgrade your ecommerce website

Magento have recently released the end date for Magento 1. They have announced that all technical support and security updates for Magento 1 will stop at the end of June 2020. Whilst that date seems quite far away, it's worth starting to plan your migration and Magento 2 upgrade now.

So why should you update to Magento 2?

What’s the difference? And how will it improve my online business? To help with carrying out the decison making process for a Magento 2 upgrade, we have compiled a list of benefits and features of the platform to show you how great this system is compared to its pioneer

It's more secure

First and foremost, Magento 2 provides more security than Magento 1, it has enhanced password management and improved prevention of XSS attacks. If you’re thinking of postponing your upgrade to Magento 2, remember that all security enhancements end for Magento 1 in 2020.

Improved performance

The redesign of Magento 2 was built with better performance in mind. Some of the statistics to back this up are staggering. Compared to the 200,000 page views an hour Magento 1 could process, Magento 2 can manage 50 times that amount with up to 10 million an hour. And yet still has 30-50% faster page load speeds.

Faster checkout = less abandoned carts

In our opinion, the most important part of an ecommerce website is the checkout process. Say goodbye to the 5+ steps you needed to take on Magento 1, the new platform offers a 2-step checkout; shipping and review, and payments. It’s also introduced an ‘instant purchase’ feature to allow a one-click purchase option – this means a lower abandonment rate and more purchases. Cha-Ching!

Catalogue scalability and handling

The new and improved software not only looks aesthetically pleasing, but it also has a faster processing system meaning more orders can be purchased at any one time in the open source edition, allowing for 39% more orders in an hour than Magento 1.

Easy to integrate extensions

Magento 2 has been designed to allow for simplified integration of key extensions, especially for differing payment gateways such as PayPal and Braintree. This will further allow customers to choose their payment option, and therefore enhance sales.

An improved site admin experience

The new admin interface is easier on the eye and provides a great user experience. The system has a simplified menu on the left, with easy to find areas. It provides an updated dashboard, so your business can quickly find the most important information, such as orders, customer data and product management.

Ecommerce management on the go!

We know that managing a business can be time-consuming, managing your online shop has never been easier with Magento 2. The entire content management system is completely responsive allowing you to update products, categories and even process orders on the go.

Make your transition easy

Moving your website to a new platform may seem like a daunting task, but the earlier you begin, the easier it can be. We would recommend hiring a Magento Certified Team to help assist with the move, from here they will be able to help you review your extensions and functionalities of your current site. Any customisation on your website will also need reviewing if it is no longer needed it may be worthwhile removing now to help save time on the move.
