ICANN VERIFICATION

New rules are now in place that could put your website at risk. ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)’s new policy means that owners of domain names (such as .com, .org and .net) must verify contact details stored with the domain name to make sure these are correct, or run the risk of having your website suspended.

All domain owners affected will receive an email from their registrar which will ask for contact details to be updated & then to verify these in another email. If contact detail updates have not been verified after 15 days, your domain name will be temporarily suspended & your website will go down. The tricky thing is, the verification email could easily be mistaken for spam email & some people or junk mail filters may delete it by mistake!

Follow our checklist to make sure you don’t get caught out:

1.       Check who your domain registrar is: http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp

2.       Login to your domain registrar (for example could be www.123-reg.co.uk or www.fasthost.co.uk) Make sure the contact email address & contact details are up to date.

3.       Act quickly on any emails you receive about your domain name, but always be cautious as a subject as important as this makes it a popular target for spammers looking to gain access to your person details.
